FAQ

Where is Sapa?

Sapa is a border town located at 1600 m of altitude, in the mountainous zone bordering with China. Famous for its rich landscape and mix of ethnic groups that inhabit the area, Sapa is the ideal destination in Vietnam for those looking for mountains and activities such as trekking or hiking.

How to get to Sapa

A common question when visiting Vietnam is how to get from Hanoi to Sapa. There are 2 ways to get to Sapa for your trek: by train or by bus.

By Train
This is the easiest and most popular way to get to Sapa. If you choose this way of transport, you will have to take the 8-hour train from Hanoi to Lao Cai Railway Station. From the train station, you will need to take a shuttle to get to Sapa. We advise you to book your train ticket in advance since it can get very busy, especially during the weekends.

By Bus
The bus journey from Hanoi directly to Sapa takes 6 hours approximately and the prices vary depending on the level of comfort. Buses depart at all times of day from Hanoi. The only detail about choosing buses instead of trains are the roads, which can get quite windy and sometimes dangerous.

If you need help arranging your transfer from Hanoi to Sapa, your trekking company can arrange it for you. They are always happy to help!

Best season

The weather in Vietnam can be quite unpredictable, and this applies to all the seasons. However, there are some months that are more advisable than others when it comes to visiting this unique country. The best month to trek in Sapa is in August when the rice fields are the greenest. This month, however, belongs to the rainy season, so, if you choose August, make sure you bring a good pair of trekking boots because it will get muddy.

March to May and September to November are the most recommended months to visit the region. During these months it doesn't rain as much and the landscapes are clearer.

During winter, from November to February, the temperatures can get as low as 0°C. Although it doesn't rain much during winter, thick fog is common, which makes it difficult to enjoy the beautiful landscapes typical of this region.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary in Vietnam though it is highly appreciated. Remember that tourism is an important activity in the region and it helps boost the local economy. Of course, there is no fixed sum when it comes to tipping. However, if you had a good trek, you can thank you guide with a generous tip. USD 5-10 per day of trek is a good estimate as to how much to tip your guide.
